Guangzhou

December 5th, 2007 by Eric

It’s been a while since I last posted but I was pretty sick last week and didn’t have the energy to blog, and currently I still have a cough.

The last weekend in November I went with my parents to Guangzhou and we met up with my uncle, two of my aunts, and my grandmother. On the Saturday, we visited “the village.” I’m still not sure how it works but there were several family shrines we had a visit and I guess in the past everyone that lived in the village were either related to or worked for/with my grandfather and the family. I don’t know. We also visited my grandfather’s grave and my great-grandfather’s grave.

On the Sunday, we did a little sightseeing. We went to a site honouring Wong Fei-Hung, whose name I remember from some movies. After that we saw a massive statue of what I think was the God of Mercy.

It was a short trip but I think the experience was worth it. Guangzhou is a dirty place though. It’s probably China in general. The air was dirty, there was garbage on the streets….

And man… Chinese people are so intense. On the plane from Japan to Guangzhou, there was this older Chinese woman waiting to go to the bathroom. From my seat I could see that the “Occupied” sign was lit up, and I’m sure it said occupied on the door, but she probably wasn’t able to read it. So she tried pushing the door open. No luck. You’d think if you couldn’t get it open the first time, it must be locked and someone is in there. But no. She harassed the door like there was no tomorrow. She must have given it a good 8 or 9 forceful pushes, then tired and gave up. Then I thought, “Ah silly Chinese people… reminds me of home.”

Pictures of the trip are on my Facebook page. There are too many to upload here and I am lazy.

Home for Christmas in 16 days.

That’s why I don’t really want to go to China… sounds too ghetto.
